2020 Vision

 2019 saw me complete quite a few of the objectives I had set myself at the start & throughout the year, including:

  • Completed the 214 Wainwright Fells
  • Completed the Ullswater Way
  • First Welsh Wild-camp
  • First Yorkshire Wild-camp
  • Saw my first wild Red Squirrel
  • Saw my first Starling Murmuration
  • Got out to see the Red Deer Rut
  • Walked around Derwentwater
  • Got 16 wild camps in the bag (or should that be rucksack?)
Now its time to start afresh for the new decade, and to start it off right, I've set myself the following goals for 2020:
  • First Scotland Wildcamp
  • Finish the Welsh 3000's
  • First Peak District Wildcamp
  • Wildcamp Yorkshire - Whernside & Fountains Fell
  • Complete the 10 Highest Mountains in England by climbing Cross Fell (Eden Valley, North Pennines)
  • and finally, for now, wild-camp at least once per calendar month.....

The Ullswater Way

  With now less than 30 Wainwright summits to reach, and a glorious long Easter weekend just around the corner I made plans to hit the Ullswater Way on Good Friday & Easter Saturday. The Way itself is a 20-mile route circumnavigating Ullswater - the second largest Lake in England. This can be broken up into four stages using the historical Ullswater Steamers ferry service, or it could be tackled in one go. Western Lakeland Getaway - Part 4: Loweswater Gold

  Hidden away behind the hedgerows & woodland at the end of the Buttermere / Crummock Water valley sits the tiny hamlet of Loweswater, and its nearby lake namesake. There might not be much there, but what is there is full of history & an ideal location to spend my last night on my Western Lakeland Getaway. It was around 6pm when I pulled up in the Kirkstile Inn car park, named for the original name of the village. As soon as I entered the building you could feel the history of the place - how many pints had been drank, and how many conversations had been had over the four hundreds of years the Inn had stood here. I made my way into the bar and checked in. I was led through narrow twisting corridors, up stairs and through a door into my room. A Walk On The Wild(Life) Side - Part 1

  Since lockdown came back into force in early November, I was back to exploring my local area, and in particular the nearby nature reserves. I found myself taking my Canon camera with me, and swaying to more wildlife orientated photographs as opposed to the landscape photography I normally do in the hills & mountains. The only wildlife photography I have done previously was the Red Deer, & Red Squirrels, but on my local walks it was more bird life I would be engaging with, and their small size & fleeting behaviour meant this would be a bit of a challenge. The nearest nature reserve to where I live is also the largest nature reserve in the Bolton Borough - Moses Gate Country Park. Made up of old mill lodges, native woodlands, sections of the now disused Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal system, with the River Croal also running through the park, and converging with the River Irwell a mile or two downstream.
